Tim Tadder Photography: Analysis

Recently we studied the photography of Tim Tadder, specifically his two latest series: Fish Heads and Water Wigs.

Both series have the very obvious overarching theme of water, however other factors such as color and movement.  The colors of each series is very different, with Fish Heads focusing primarily on high contrast blacks and lights and Water Wigs being more colorful pastels.  However, both have contrast in order to display the focus of the image; in Fish Heads, that focus is primarily on the subject and the surrounding air bubbles which contrast the black background, and in Water Wigs, that contrast is displayed by complementary colors to focus on the water balloons.
While both series have a lot to do with water, they also display a lot of movement that is not seen by the human eye.  When water is disturbed, one has difficulty seeing its behavior as it moves too fast.  By using a camera, Tadder is able to capture the water in one still frame, thus showing the water as still.
